Derek Gripper’s Beginner African Guitar Course

The best way to work out what to do with that guitar that has been lying around for years!

In this course we will explore the basics required to join me for future lessons, or to be able to benefit from the scores I publish.

My philosophy is that if you learn one thing at a time, one thing that you can do, that you can make very fast progress in a way that is fun and effortless. This makes the world of difference in how you play further down the line, and in how you enjoy your music experience. In the course, lasting two hours, we will learn my unique tuning used for my translations of African music, how to read tablature, how to pluck the strings and how to play basic melodies and accompaniments.

The music we will use for this will be taken from the beautiful tradition of the West African griots, music which is perfectly suited to learning the basics of guitar for the first time. After the course you will be invited to join a WhatsApp group for online group Zoom classes with people from all over the world. These are wonderful opportunities to continue exploring this music in the comfort of your own home – and nobody else in the group can hear you so you get complete audio anonymity!

At the end of the course you will also get a worksheet to work from with audio samples to practice with.
